The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs go to St James' Park on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
