Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying such treatments need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
