"How often on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the biggest compliment. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to form a group."

Historic Milestone

The trio have called into home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," says Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The album emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics track departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That newfound resilience demanded a new sound – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The band's candor fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone left Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international following.

However the sister act will consistently be their top priority.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "There is no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
