Just as bad weather tore through the north-west the prior day, the home side swept the visitors away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three-nil win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their leadership claims as they strengthened their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Defeats for United

This result signalled back-to-back WSL losses for Skinner's side for the first time since spring 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the top team with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

Manchester United's ability to balance domestic and continental football with a small squad has been a widely debated subject since they qualified for the European competition. Considering the calendar, it always felt like this was the matchday that would truly test this ability. Regrettably for the opposition, they seemed weary throughout, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

The United manager had attempted to make changes with a several alterations. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all brought energy, although the dropping of the in-form Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

City, in comparison, have fewer fitness concerns. The City coach made one change from last week’s win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from injury.

Commanding Opening Period

The trouble started to build for Skinner and his team from the first whistle. This was a show of the strength from City whose dynamic offense played with and tore United open with a superb initial 45 minutes showing that saw them put three past the keeper in 21 minutes.

Opening Threats

United had several sorties forwards, their direct style giving them options in the wide areas but they could not trouble the City goalkeeper. City, meanwhile, dominated possession, probing their opposition and trying to lure them of their defensive shape.

Scoring Spree

They made their pressure count with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A ball to the far post was headed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's 7th headed goal of the season.

They increased their cushion with an additional two goals just before the interval. When Rose was able to maraud through the middle from central defence, the pitch widened for City. Shortly later, they had a third after a quick shift in possession saw Lauren Hemp given the opportunity to fire a effort home from distance.

Second Half

The most obvious substitution came from Skinner at the break as Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the game. Former Manchester City player Park came closest, rattling the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and failed to register a solitary shot on target.
