Crew Member Reveals Depression After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the Kármán line of space.
The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.
The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company established by a well-known tech mogul.
